A divorce doesn't have to be ugly.
There is no fixed time frame. The "right" number of mediation sessions and their duration and frequency are determined by the actual time each couple needs to work things out. If there are very few issues and the parties can agree on most of them, a few sessions will suffice. Typically, sessions are two to three hours, and are held every week or every other week.

Cost depends on how long the process takes. If you are mediating, you may try to do as much of the work between the two of you as possible. You may choose to pay as you go. Most divorce mediation couples share the cost. You decide the frequency of your meetings. After the initial meeting, successive meetings may be face-to-face, by conference call, or via e-mail correspondence to both parties.
Collaborative representation requires a retainer agreement. The amount of the initial retainer varies and will be determined upon an initial consultation.
Divorce coaching is available on an hourly basis but also requires a written fee agreement. There is no initial retainer necessary.

Other professionals may be involved in the divorce process. In mediation, for example, a trusted child psychologist may provide input. Or the parties may choose to involve their accountant, financial advisor, or other professional who may provide pertinent information. It may involve a joint effort, with the goal of achieving a settlement agreement.
